Is there CBD in other plants than cannabis – Through genetic engineering, yeasts and hops can be used to produce CBD and other cannabinoids found only in cannabis. Over the past two decades, the cannabis plant has received much attention because of the health benefits it brings or it could potentially bring. The cannabinoids in cannabis are primarily responsible for these health benefits. More specifically, researchers are particularly interested in the cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) .

Nowadays, cannabis faces legality problems in many countries of the world. For this reason, knowing that the cannabis plant may not be the only source of CBD and other potentially beneficial cannabinoids is good news. Scientists have successfully synthesized CBD in the laboratory for quite some time. However, this production method is expensive and has only minimal yield.

Since it takes hundreds of milligrams of CBD for the dosage to be therapeutically viable, synthetic production is not a practicable route. In addition, CBD synthesized in the laboratory is not intended for human consumption. This leaves only the option of using the natural biological processes of organisms to produce CBD. Two specific organisms can allow this, hops and yeasts.


In order to create cannabinoids from the biological machinery of organisms, scientists need two essential components. The first is made up of the precursor molecules that make up the cannabinoids. The second element is composed of the enzymes responsible for the transformation of these precursor molecules into cannabinoids.

For scientists to be able to create cannabinoids using yeast and hops, these organisms must be able to produce geranyl diphosphate (GDP) and hexanoic acid. Many plants have the capacity to produce hexanoic acid. This acid is then transformed into olivetolic acid (OA). Scientists can then synthesize GDP and OA into cannabigerolic acid.

The production of cannabigerolic acid is a very important step in the process of creating cannabinoids. Once this stage is reached, it is enough to have the right enzyme to facilitate its conversion into cannabinoids. When heat is applied to these acid forms, they give the conventional compounds CBD or THC . A major drawback of this method is that cananbis is the only plant who


Hops, also called Humulus lupulus, are a species of flowering plant belonging to the family of Cannabaceae. It is the family of plants which also shelters cannabis. The hop cone-shaped female flowers are very commonly used as a flavoring agent in beer. Hops can also be an alternative source of CBD and potentially other cannabinoids.

Last year, a company called Isodiol International Inc. made a statement claiming to have discovered a way to extract CBD from hops. Isodiol International Inc. specializes in wellness products and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. The company has yet to disclose the proprietary methods by which it extracted CBD.

However, it is indeed possible to extract CBD from hops, at least in theory. This is only possible using CRISPR genetic manipulation technology. CRISPR is a set of DNA sequences in bacteria and archaea. These sequences form the basis of CRISPR technology, which allows effective and specific genetic modifications to organisms.

Scientists could use CRISPR technology to introduce the DNA responsible for producing the enzymes that transform cannabinoid precursor molecules into active cannabinoids. The fact that hops and cannabis are chemically linked supports the theory. With this method, the conversion of cannabigerolic acid to CBD or THC is possible in hops. This is the most likely explanation for how Isodiol International Inc was able to turn hops into a cannabinoid-producing plant.


Other scientists have turned to yeast as a potential source of cannabinoids. Naturally, yeasts do not produce cannabinoids. However, thanks to sophisticated manipulations on DNA, it is possible to transform yeasts into cannabinoid producers. A California-based company called Librede arrived there.


Librede is a synthetic biology company headquartered in San Diego and a leader in the natural biosynthesis of cannabinoids sector. The company recently filed a patent for the production of cannabidiolic acid  (CBDA) in yeast . They genetically modified yeasts to produce CBDA from raw materials like sugar.

CBDA is naturally present in cannabis and scientists can use it to produce CBD. Thanks to genetic engineering, yeasts can also produce THC, other cannabinoids and terpenes naturally found in cannabis. The good point of this production method is that it is far less expensive than conventional cultivation methods. The process of extracting cannabinoids from yeast takes less than a week. In addition, the Librede method has advantages in view of the environmental impact.


Growing cannabis involves a considerable consumption of water and energy. This is even more the case for indoor growing. In addition, many growers use fertilizers and pesticides. This can often lead to contamination of water sources. Overall, traditional methods of cultivation and extraction impact the environment to some extent. Producing CBD from yeast may be a less expensive method, but this has yet to be determined. Librede has received funding to improve the production of CBD and other cannabinoids from genetically modified yeasts.

There is a significant concern about extracting CBD from alternative plant sources and that is the loss of the “whole plant” aspect of cannabis. Whole plant cannabis extracts are far more viable from a standpoint than isolated CBD, as the different compounds found in cannabis can enhance or lessen their respective effects. One solution to this problem would be an approach in which scientists formulate an optimal combination of ingredients, using different extraction methods.
